Andrew Yang on Universal Basic Income and Measuring Our Economic Health

-Thanks for making
the time for us. So, you are —
You’re in this thing. You’re polling higher than
some governors, some congressmen, senators. And a lot of people,
I think it’s safe to say, did not know who you were
a very short time ago. -Yes, that’s fair to say. -And you’re running on this idea
of a universal basic income, which is giving every American
$1,000 a month. And are you worried that,
because you’re polling higher that as other candidates
get desperate, they’ll start
offering $1,100 a month? -Well, that would be
a version of victory, Seth. I’ve said for a while that I’m
either going to win or the other candidates are
going to sound a lot like me. -Well, that’s a very good way
of looking at it. I do want to talk — Because I’m fascinated by
this idea of a Freedom Dividend. Before we do that, it does seem
like you’re having fun out there, and I think
that’s really important. I believe this is all just in
the last week or two. -Let’s see it. -Here’s a montage we’ve made
of you enjoying yourself on the campaign trail. ♪♪ -We need some more. [ Cheers and applause ]
♪♪ -You’re having
a good time out there. -Yes.
[ Cheers and applause ] Yeah. -So, I think one
of the reasons, again, people are happy to see you,
they’re happy to hear you, is you have this idea of,
“I’m going to give you $1,000 a month
if I win this thing.” Now, obviously, Democrats
who are onstage with you — a lot of them have big ideas for
healthcare, education. They think that your plan is
maybe going a little too far. So explain, really quickly, this
universal-basic-income idea. Like, why you think it is
the core of what is behind your plan. -First, it’s not my idea at all. It’s been with United States
since our founding. Thomas Paine was for it.
Martin Luther King was for it. And one state has had a dividend
for almost 40 years, where everyone in Alaska
gets between $1,000 and $2,000 a year. -Whoo!
-Whoo! -Some Alaskans. And, so, what they’re doing
for Alaska with oil money we can do for everyone
in the country with technology money, because right now, we’re in the
midst of the greatest economic transformation in
the history of our country, and it’s what got
Donald Trump elected. The fact we blasted away
4 million manufacturing jobs in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Wisconsin, Iowa, all the swing
states that he needed to win. So we need to take the bounty of
the 21st century economy and start returning it
to people. And though everyone associates
me with 1,000 bucks a month, it’s really about what
the money would do for us. It’s going to make us stronger,
healthier, mentally healthier. It’s going to improve
our relationships and our way of life. -You talk about how things —
-There isn’t applause? [ Cheers and applause ] -They were all —
They were being quiet because they were jealous of those
two Alaskans with the $1,000 in their pocket. -Yeah. -They’re like,
“They already got it.” You talk about how GDP
and the stock market are bad indicators of exactly
where this country is at, as far as its economic health. And it may seem trite,
but you think that we need to judge economic health
on happiness. Is that an accurate distillation
of the way you think? -It’s not quite happiness,
but that’s essentially right. Where GDP’s at record highs
right now, also at record highs — stress,
financial insecurity, even suicides
and drug overdoses. It’s gotten so bad that
even though our record high GDP, our life expectancy has declined
for three years in a row. The first time in 100 years. So you have to ask yourself,
are the measurements wrong or are we actually prioritizing
this production number over the life-span
of our people? And, to me, it’s obvious
the numbers are wrong, and you need to update them
to include things like our health and well-being,
our mental health, and freedom from
substance abuse, but also things like clean air
and clean water, how our kids are doing — the real measurements
for American success. -You —
[ Cheers and applause ] You talk about the numbers
adding up and I think, you know, it makes sense that a lot of
people would ask how you’d pay for $1,000 a month
to all Americans. You, yourself, I believe,
put the price tag at around $3 trillion. Is that —
-It’s a bit less than that. But if you look around,
who are the big winners from the 21st century economy? It’s a company like Amazon that’s up to $1 trillion
in value. And they have literally
paid zero in taxes, less than everyone here
in this studio. So, of course, you’re going to
struggle to pay for things if you have trillion-dollar
companies paying zero. If we give ourselves our tiny
fair share of every Amazon sale, every Google search,
every Facebook ad, every robot-truck mile,
we can easily afford $1,000 a month
for every American. -You —
[ Cheers and applause ] -Yeah. -You know,
one thing you talk about, which is interesting to me,
is when you say “universal basic income,”
you mean it, that everybody
would get this $1,000. There’s no amount of money you
could make in any given year that would price you out. -You’d get it, too. -Hey, look, trust me, I would
not have had you on the show if I was on the outside looking
in on the Yang plan. But explain —
It’s very interesting, the philosophy behind
the idea of why it’s good that everybody would get it. ‘Cause some people would say, “Why do the wealthy get
this $1,000 a month, as well?” Can you just explain that? -Well, if you look at
the Alaskan experience, everyone’s getting the
oil dividend, from the poorest Alaskan
to the richest. And because of that,
it’s universally popular. There’s no stigma
attached to it. It’s not like I’m paying for it,
you’re getting it. You don’t need to monitor
people’s circumstances. There are no incentives to say, “I’m doing worse
than I really am.” And so because of that, in
a deep-red Conservative state with a Republican governor, the petroleum dividend
is wildly popular. And so if we make this
a true right of citizenship, it will be popular nationwide. -You —
[ Cheers and applause ] You had an idea that I’m —
I’m very behind the idea of how bad a viewing experience the
State of the Union is. This is something
you agree with, yes? -I completely agree. It’s gotten bizarrely
unwatchable. -Yeah.
It’s very performative. It doesn’t feel like you get
a lot of information out of it. What is your idea for how to fix
the State of the Union? -So, my plan is to take
the American scorecard, with the real numbers
of how we’re doing, and then present them to you,
the American people, in a PowerPoint deck. Every year at the
State of the Union, I’ll be the first president
to use PowerPoint. Hopefully that’s a good thing.
[ Cheers and applause ] -I can’t imagine PowerPoints polling quite as well as
$1,000 a month, but I like the — I like
your moxie. Hey, thanks so much
for being here. It’s really interesting having
someone out there who is talking about things
nobody else is. -Thank you, man.
I appreciate it. -Andrew Yang, everybody.

  1. I like Yang, I like the idea of UBI. I don’t like the idea of UBI being paying for by a regressive tax that impacts the most vulnerable of our country, or that it leaves those in disability with a choice between current benefits and UBI, when they are already struggling.

  2. Andrew, everytime you mention Amazon and other trillion $ companies who don't pay taxes, please always add the important point that many of their employees are on welfare, so not only are they NOT contributing taxes but they also are a real extra financial burden on taxpayers!

  3. AMERICANS will be dumb enough to not elect ANDREW YANG …..SETH MEYERS will be mocking ANDREW and his UBI ideas right after he walks off the stage again……

  4. I have never seen any other youtube posts that have such universally positive comments as any post where Yang is speaking. He's sensational!

  5. Because of Andrew yang I suddenly follow politics, donated for the first time in my life and am actually excited about this 2020 race. I now make videos on my channel about Andrew. I tell my story as well on my channel. He’s the one!! He needs to win PERIOD. #yang2020 👍😄

  6. Russia's new joke. That is why they are flooding the comments section in "support" . Oh they're just laughing ! Fucking joke. Yang can eat a Wang

  7. Seth, as much as you constantly make fun of 45, you could well discover that Andrew Yang is the exact opposite of him, the orange but not Asian man in the White House.

  8. UBI is a bribe. He’s a neoliberal in socialist’s clothing. Macron basically and look what’s happening in France.

  9. I used to be a Trump supporter and all the attacks against Trump only made me support him more. Now I can confidently say that Trump is trash and all talk and Yang is the real deal. Yang belongs in the White House ASAP.

  10. Polling ahead of SOME governors? He's polling ahead of ALL governors, Seth! He's in 6th place nationally (after Biden, Bernie, Warren, Harris, and Pete) and in California he's polling at 4th place (directly after frontrunners Biden, Bernie, and Warren)… and most people haven't even HEARD of him yet! This man can WIN the election! Let's all get behind him right now! Check out the free 6-hour Yang audiobook on my channel to learn more.

  11. "When the public discovers they can vote themselves money from the public treasury, the [American] experiment will be over"-Tocqueville 1838

  12. 'That would be a version of victory, Seth.' is already an indication of him thinking about improving the country and not about him being president.

  13. I like Federal Jobs Guarentee. When robots take away my job, I can just dig ditches and someone can fill them… it's just keep us busy for the sake of being busy.

  14. Thank you NBC for giving him some tv time. Google Andrew Yang on Ben Shapiro, Joe Rogan or Rubin Report all great interviews. I loved his early stuff on Fox News. NBC has disappointed me with their reporting
of John, I mean Andrew Yang.

  15. These corporations refuse to pay taxes while using the resources and services paid for by taxes. Then these same corporations have to audacity to beg for subsidies from the government? The system is a scam.

  16. Wow, this is guy has some great ideas! 👍 And he's not 70+ years old? 👴👴👵 Seems most fit for the job to me. #Yang2020 💪😎

  17. Thank you Seth for Putting the Best Candidate for our Country on and treating him with the respect that he's due on MSM!!!
    Yang 2020!!!

  18. ❤With many having to choose between food and life-saving/extending meds, $1,000 per month would greatly improve the health of SO MANY! Better health = more productive workforce. My health ins is over $400/month but I still can't afford copays + 20% of total cost to have ANY non-emergency medical care! The $1,000/month would resolve such issues. It would ALL be pumped back into the economy one way or another (UNLIKE ORANGE IDIOT'S CORP TAX BREAKS😡)! Best Wishes Mr. Yang for such a humanitarian idea!👍🇺🇸

  19. Andrew Yang is the choice to move America forward. To right the imbalances in our system. Be sure to check out his Democracy Dollars policy for campaign finance reform and the core message of Humanity First.
Yang2020 All The Way to the White House!

  20. Even if Yang doesn't win, it's hopefully a victory because he's playing by the Ross Perot method: a fringe candidate coming out with "crazy" ideas that win over the public and influence policy of the elected officials. Bill Clinton's trade policies and Newt Gingrich's Contract with America all came from the Ross Perot method

  21. Yeah, I actually think the "Power Point" idea is pretty good. I'd rather get a talk about how we're doing in detail, instead of some old timey crap.

  22. I definitely think Seth has been looking into Yang. It's like, every question he asked was literally a set-up for Yang to perfectly answer. Especially the last question.

Where can the federal government collect ADDITIONAL $2.8 trillion dollars to fund this UBI?
    Can someone from YangGang help?

  24. UBICALCULATOR.com ——> Figure out how the Freedom Dividend will help your household.

  25. $1000 a month or $2000 a month for 2 adult households (tax free!) will so so much for American families. Those who argue against it should donate that money to those who need it.

  26. Take the time to read Yang's ideas and policies (all on his website) and you will see how intelligent he is. Far above any other person running for office. I hope common sense and love of country and our people will prevail.

  27. What bothers me about Yang is that he's being dishonest when he says his Basic Income plan would give $1000 per month to everyone. When you read the fine print at his website you'll see it would eliminate benefits like SSI and food stamps. I'm not saying that that's a bad idea, but I'd feel better about it if Yang was honest about it when he talks about his plan.

  28. Yang seems like a nice guy, but I’ll be voting for #TheRealDeal. We need a true public servant who understands ALL the issues, not another businessman. The federal government is NOT a business, it’s nothing like a business and it should NOT be run like one! Also UBI alone doesn’t address income inequality or many other problems.
    #Bernie2020

  29. He seems like a nice enough guy, but for me- and based on reactions I've seen on twitter, etc, I'm not alone- his fanbase is absolutely toxic. All they do is troll the web for ANY COMMENTS that aren't 100% supportive and then they swarm and post the same idiotic burns over and over, most of which are outright lies. And it's ironic that the very first thing Yang does in this interview is say that the concept of UBI is not his because one of the most common "insults" I see from the YangGang is that "everyone is copying his ideas!"

  30. Everyone asks the easy question: "Who is going to pay for UBI" but never the hard one: "What will $1000/m buy several years after the implementation of UBI?" Unless all my economics professors were wrong, the answer is 'almost nothing'. Inflation will rapidly erode the value of the dollar. Yang needs to speak to that if he is going to succeed.

  31. For anyone curious about Yang, his long form podcasts are much better than a 7 minute interview. Search "Yang Joe Rogan" and prepare to have your mind blown, get very depressed, and then extremely hopeful at the future we could choose for ourselves.

  32. Search on YouTube for any interview over 20 mins with Andrew Yang, and you'll find yourself nodding along thinking "this makes so much sense…" He just did the climate change townhall with MSNBC

  33. …why didn't he say this the first time on that debate stage?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 he'd literally be in the top 5 right now

  34. This guy is a ‘FUCKING JOKE’ and is attempting to run a presidential race on this ‘Freedom Dividend’ ploy and I get the suspicion that he is the equivalent to the Democratic, Asian Donald Trump, but just poorer. Anybody who votes for this Jackass will be considered a huge jack ass. Did you see the part where he asked for an applause after he spoke about his $1000 a month dividend. Gtfoh, you are taking advantage of people’s ignorance, wanting to get rich, and their economic situation and you are buying their vote and that is essentially what Donny boy in the White House has tried for three years. He can’t take money from companies to pay for his government ran program. That’s not how things work in the U.S. and obviously there are a lot of rich and powerful people that are not going to allow some guy to take money from these billion dollar companies like Amazon or Google to fund their stunt to get elected, maybe. That’s why I know Andrew Yang is a Fucking Joke.

  35. When the lightbulbs go off…..!

Democracy Dollars is also an ingenuitive way to get back politics from lobbyists and corporate interests. How about policy for the people? Not policy for the corporate interests?
    #YangGang

  36. That’s my President!! I’d vote for him even if we did not have the FD. Actually learning something at the State of the Union?! PowerPoints?! Sign me up! Plus the other 100+ policies on his website. #yang2020

  37. Tbh felt like Yang actually gave rather weak answers for such great questions that he should be very familiar with. Should have given more specific answers to the "How does UBI solve a lot of things" and he went more into taxing Amazon answering that. Also on the why give it to everyone, could have leaned more into the idea of removing any stigmas from receiving UBI. He's had stronger answers to all these questions and gave weaker answers on the show. He didn't completely botch any answers but I feel like he could have answered much better and made more impact

  38. Calm, collected, and concise. Secure the bag. #yanggang
The mainstream surge is coming, and I think it will be only a matter of weeks before Yang is a household name like the top 3.
