We are at our Health and Wellbeing event today and it’s organised by Macmillan Southport in conjunction with Southport & Formby CCG and Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust The aim of the event is to be an information and support event for anybody at any stage of their cancer pathway. The benefit of this type of event is that it is a community setting, people say that they like to be here, where there is lots of infomation all in one place. It’s that chance to speak to our clinical nurse specialists and have the freedom to have a chat with them in an informal environment away from the hospital setting. The visitors? We’ve got around 140 people here today and they are a mixture of patients, family members or friends who are supporting a person affected by cancer. There are lots of other organisations here: partners, charities, welfare rights teams, activity programmes, emotional support, all kinds of information all in one place. I’m a Macmillan Information and Support Officer based at the Living Well centre in Southport It’s my job to help give information and support anyone who is affected by cancer, whether it is themselves, their friends, or family. We have a drop in centre and you can come in, any weekday between 10am and 4pm (Monday to Friday) We say anyone who is affected by cancer is welcome. No question is too big or small and our kettle is always on for a cup of tea and a chat. Macmillan is really well known for the information booklets that it provides and we run various support groups. We have a counsellor as part of our staff team, there are activity programmes that people can be referred onto. There are all kinds of other things going on.
