Like many, you may be wondering how you can
help your children get 60 or more minutes of daily physical activity and still meet
the recommendations yourself. The answer is to rethink your idea of exercise. Think of
physical activity as simply leading an active lifestyle, which you can do as a family. Our
video today will highlight 5 different ways you can be active together.
Whether you head into town or just cruise the neighborhood, building a walk into your
daily schedule ensures that it won’t get put off. If you have a dog, be sure to bring him
along. Hold disco night with your kids. Move the
furniture aside, crank up your families favorite tunes and dance away. For more fun, let the
kids take turns being the DJ. Designate one night a week to be family sports
night. Play standard games or make up crazy and wacky games for your family to play. Let
each family member be in charge of choosing the games for a night.
You can even be active when watching TV. When a commercial comes on, everyone gets up and
does some sort of physical activity. It could be squats, push-ups and sit-ups or you could
dance, march, and wiggle. Everyone should get a turn leading the activities during the
night. Kids are great at digging up dirt, so let
them turn over the soil and help you plant new bulbs, flowers, or plants. Gardening can
help build strong bones and muscles. Also, if you’re planting vegetables, your children
might be more interested in helping prepare and eat them.
No matter what you choose to do as a family, the great thing is that you are doing it together.
Quality family time is important and being active together helps to build strong bodies
and strong families.
