Signs your body is stressed that’s what
I’m talking about today I’m dr. Tracey Marks. If you’re new to this channel I
talk about mental health education and self-improvement. I publish new videos
every Wednesday so if you don’t want to miss one click subscribe and hit the
notification button. Even if you think you’re handling your stress well your
body could tell you otherwise and in this video I’m gonna give you seven not
so typical signs that your body is stressed. So how does your body respond
to stress? Well cortisol and adrenaline are two
chemicals that are secreted in the body under stress. Adrenaline is the fight or
flight hormone and cortisol metabolizes sugar in the body to make it accessible
to the brain. Cortisol also suppresses the body’s
immune response so typical signs of stress include things like high blood
pressure, poor sleep, racing hearts and heart rate. And these are the things that
are related to adrenaline. Some of the atypical symptoms are things like teeth
grinding or also called bruxism. And this involves clenching your jaw or grinding
your teeth back and forth. And this can happen at any time.
And you may notice that you say wake up with pain or you could even wake up with
a headache if you’re doing this at night. And sometimes too much teeth grinding
can cause cracked teeth. Unfortunately tooth grinding can be worsened if you
have acid reflux. Wearing a bite guard at night can help and you can get one
specially fitted by a dentist or you could buy a generic one at a drugstore.
I’ve had both. The generic ones could be big and it could be hard to fit in your
mouth and you got to even work hard to like close your mouth down. But, and the
custom ones though they’re pricey, but they are much better because they just
they fit your mouth. Number two: poor digestion. When your body’s stressed you
can get decreased motility and slowed digestion. So this can feel like you get
a stomachache or some type of stomach pain or gas or
bloating every time you eat. Slow digestion can also lead to constipation.
Why? Because as your food moves through the gastrointestinal tract
and through your intestine, it absorbs water. So if you’ve got slowed movement
your intestines are still drawing out water from the food or the fecal matter.
So if it moves too slowly and you absorb too much water then you can get hard
stools. So even if you don’t have hard stools, what this could end up looking
like is that you don’t go you don’t have a bowel movement very often. So instead
of having one every 1 to 2 days if you eat every day
you eat every day it should move through. So if you don’t have one every one to
two days, maybe you have a bowel movement every 3 or 4 days. So infrequent bowel
movements and/or hard stool and/or stomachaches after you’ve eaten things
could be a sign that you’re stressed. Another sign is sore muscles. Stress
causes the muscles to tense up and you can get aches and pains in places like
your neck and your back even with my without much activity. So you can get to
the end of the day and just feel exhausted and even achy and sore when
all you did was sit all day. You can help this by taking stretch breaks and also
Yoga is a powerful way to reduce stress. Next your hair. Chronic stress increases
cortisol levels which promotes inflammation and free radical damage and
this can result in increased or accelerated graying of your hair. But
hair loss is different. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that results
in in hair loss and this can just kind of go and come and fluctuate over time
and is not really related to stress. However you can get excessive hair
shedding because of stress and sleep loss can also disrupt the hair’s life
cycle leading to shedding. But the shedding makes your hair thinner
versus what you see with alopecia where you get clean spots usually circular
spots of hair loss. Next weight gain. Chronic sleep loss also causes increased
cortisol levels that affects your weight. And this may not look like you packed on
50 pounds because of it, but it may be more subtle weight gain like weight that
just kind of creeps up on you and you just can’t seem to lose despite
exercising regularly and having a healthy diet.
Number six frequent colds. High cortisol levels suppress your immune system so
that could make you more acceptable to getting sick often. Are you someone who
always seems to get sick every time it’s flu season? Having a suppressed immune
system also can activate or trigger dormant viruses like shingles which is
the Herpes virus or cold sores. So having an eruption of shingles or having
frequent cold sores could be a sign that you’re under a lot of stress. Last one: no
sex drive. Increased cortisol suppresses sexual arousal. One solution or one thing
that can help is exercise. Engaging in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 5 days a
week noticeably reduces stress and lowers
cortisol levels. So these are some telltale signs of stress that show you
that your body is trying to get your attention that you’re under a lot of
stress. And this is its reaction to it If you have one or more of these
signs, you need to work on managing your stress. You certainly don’t always have
control over your stress or the things that’s causing the stress, but what you
can have more control over is how you manage it. I’ve mentioned two ways to do
this the exercise and yoga. Another good way is using mindfulness meditation I
did a previous video on this and I’ll link to it in the corner for you to
watch. Try incorporating that in your day as just one more tool in your

  1. Alopecia…happened to a buddy in his mid 20s during basic training for the Army. He had grey/balding patches (almost perfect circles) all over his head. Reminded me of my punk rock days…he was tough as anyone, but the stress still got him in it's own way.

    Towards the end of my first semester in grad school, I came down with bronchitis. At the end of the last formal semester, I came down with the shingles virus.   2. I've been making more time for me the past 6 weeks. I had a total meltdown and hit the wall of burnout last month. So I gave myself permission to not make new videos, to not worry about Instagram and to pull my website down rather than pull consecutive all nighters trying to sort through all the information on GDPR. I just stopped all of it and started exercising again. And getting my sleep and thinking about what I want to do going forward. I did go out and get a part time job to ease the financial stress, and it will be interesting to manage that. It will be a good way for me to strengthen my boundaries and to be firm in my NO. So I anticipate some stress in the next few weeks until things settle down and I have my firm schedule in place. I will say, I made a new video this week and I enjoyed making it. So that is a good sign! And I'm excited to get back into making more. Also I am a terrible teeth grinder and wear my night guard every night. I was not meant for all this worry and stress and long hours! HA HA!!

I have lupus, Sjögren's syndrome & RA and find stress ( which I have a lot of at the moment) activates a bad flare with each of them, I get insomnia then I get a cycle of depression, with the lack of sleep and pain. It's like a vicious circle that doesn't end at the moment. 🙁 I can't switch off my mind.
    Just don't want to use the strong pain relief the Rheumatology Consultant prescribes ( opioids )but sometimes I have too with the pain, unfortunately this doesn't help my mental health with my BP2.
    I used to go to gym and yoga daily right into my 30's and horse riding, then started getting organ damage and joint issues , went downhill from there, once diagnosed with my auto immune issues.
    I think I could start some gentle yoga daily again, maybe if I calm my mind, it may help my other illnesses. 😊 Thank you.

  11. What about hallucinations? Isolation cells in prisons can elicit hallucinations in prisoners right? So shouldn’t stress be able to do the same? Like bugs crawling on the skin, underneath fabric & on the walls?

  12. Very interesting. I have severe chronic stress due to a 3 year situation of which I have no control. I have all of these in spades in addition to the years of outrageous inflammation that’s literally shutting my body down. I never knew that my embarrassing jaw clinching was part of it, though. I look like such an idiot in public.

  13. I have teeth grinding, hair loss and no sex drive. I also have Multiple Sclerosis, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Endometriosis and chronic depression. Any tips to start recovering to a better me?

  14. It took so much for me to accept that stress, and in my case anxiety disorder, can cause all the somatic symptoms. I've been seeing doctors for six months, and having medical imaging, tests and biochemical analyses done throughout. It was raging and at one point I felt like I can't walk and will end up in a wheelchair, yet several neurologists insisted my reflexes are optimal. Having had ENMG and MRI , which ended up ruling out the organicity, I was finally directed to a psychiatrist and forced to accept that my untreated anxiety disorder was causing this. I probably still would not believe that this kind of mind-body physiological relation is even possible, was it not for the therapy which greatly reduced my somatic symptoms.

    A clinical psychologist told me, that in his practice he keeps seeing people who ignore, or neglect the mental signs, so they end up with a rainbow of somatic symptoms. He said it's kind of your body forcing you to notice your mental distress, via the ANS mainly.

    I even had things like blurry vision (which I thought was anything from glaucoma to retinoblastoma), fasciculations and elevated blood pressure, which I normally have slightly lower than what is (currently) considered optimal by majority of MDs. And all those went away ( I still do occasionally get them, to a significantly less degree, but when I'm really stressed or anxious ) with therapy which was basically BDZ (initially, first 2 weeks), anxiolytics and some antidepressants.

    Honestly I'm still in awe that a mental condition can cause such a wide somatic clinical image. And the DSM V nearly said somatoform disorders aren't real. They're not even called that way anymore.

    So thank you for this video Dr. Tracey. Coming from a psychiatrist it's reassuring, informative and educational. Blessings!

  15. My high stress and sleep deprivation are what I suspect is a factor in my jaw clenching, body soreness, and the three colds I have had in the past month. Also, my periods get really intense and I have especially severe PMS and cramping. I love doing yoga to help with stress, which I have not done at all in the past month. It shows how important self-care really is, with proper sleep and exercise. I spend so much time taking care of others, that I do not leave enough time for my own wellness.

  17. Dr. Tracey – Having bipolar at age 60, the last five years I have felt more and more achy and my muscles feel like they are filled with concrete and are tight and painful to press on. I usually walk daily (unless I'm in one of my depressive phases). The exercise seems to have no effect on alleviating my soreness. I have seen several specialists who can't find anything "wrong" with me. So is the discomfort all in my head?

But unfortunately after watching this I’m beginning to see I’m extremely stressed and it’s never ending! I can’t see myself consulting a psychologist but I’m caught between knowing I’m stressed but not quite sure how to undo my stress levels in my head.

  28. Hello what are your thoughts on low fatigue? I work out and also work 8 hour days no matter what I'm doing i got exhausted and have to take a break? My stress level is on a medium level and i also deal with aniexty.

  29. I’ve been diagnosed with major depression, GAD & adhd inattentive. I’m on meds for all. My heart rate has always been pretty high for as long as I can remember (sine I was like 15?) it was at the highest the last time I was at my psychiatrist, at 120BPM, it was finals week, but he wants to put me on a beta blocker, and I’m really not wanting to take another med. I explained to him it must be my stress. Wondering if you had any insights thank you so much. Xo.

  30. Weight gain is my nemesis when I am stressed or depressed. I fluxuate, but, hey, at 71 I am trying hard. Exercise and mindfulness are best and eating three small meals a day, six hours apart. Thank you!🙋🏼‍♀️

  31. Excellent presentation 👍🏽👍🏽. Some of them were a surprise. I have Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease. So, I do my very best to do yoga 3x',s a week, drink 3 cups of tea (one being green tea), take my meds as described & see a therapist. Since my world is different, I find myself really stressed out. I also do mindfulness, pray during my baths, but I am so tired all of the time. Any suggestions on how to not feel do stressed & reduce my cortisone levels? I absolutely love your videos. Thank you.

  33. We need to appreciate anxiety guys. They save our lives man. I work better with anxiety and do more. And feel safer like ever since I started taking meds and it took my racing thoughts and anxiety away I miss it and learned I need to push myself and learn to fight win and overcome it and most of all appreciate all the good that comes from it.   34. Wow. I know I’m very stressed and I expected to have at least half of the symptoms, but I did not expect to have every single one! Why I’m shocked is beyond me, I was just diagnosed by a physiatrist, not even 3 months ago with panic disorder. Not only that, I’m about 95% sure I suffer from hypochondria. I constantly feel like I’m having some severe medical condition. Tonight I’m feeling stroke symptoms, hence why I’m watching Dr. Marks. The other night, I was positive I was having a brain aneurism. Living a life of constant fear, worry, stress and major physical symptoms is just hell. I truly feel like my severe anxiety (fear & worry) is just going to take me out one day. By heart attack, stroke or brain bleed. My local ER department know me by name now. Because I’m in the ER between 3 or 4 nights a week because of “symptoms”. And I know there’s people out there that know exactly what this is like, but escaping from this hell feels like the impossible. I have watched a million self help videos, the anxiety guy, meditation and relaxation videos, and I’m still living in this hell. And nobody in my life understands it, but I love the people on the Internet that get it.
    I’m a stay at home mom, that’s my only job and obligation in life. My husband works two jobs and is always gone. I feel like he should be more stressed than me because he has more responsibilities. Like 10 times the responsibilities I have. After all he does all the finances, plus watches over 50 sex offenders on his case load, plus all the children he sees in home as a quailed mental health professional. Yet I’m the one feeling like I’m dying every night of my life and can’t figure out why!?! I have two kids, 2 year old and a 4 year old. My 4 year old is developmentally delayed and can be quite taxing on the nerves at times, but nothing that I can blame this amount of stress on. Or anxiety or hypochondria. I tell my physiatrist how I feel, but I feel like he don’t believe me. Or he thinks I’m making it up. He put me on a whole slew of antidepressants, that have literally made everything 1000 times worse. I’m now 30lbs heavier, zero sex drive, plus can’t even have an orgasm the ONE TIME a month I do have sex. I feel worse about myself than ever, none of my clothes fit and honestly I prefer not to look in the mirror at all anymore. I have aged Drastically over the last few years and all I see when I do look in the mirror is dark circles under my eyes because I can’t sleep a wink hardly. And all of this just hit me at once. Like I was trucking through life fine as dandelion wine, then one day I woke up and had panic and anxiety. No traumatic event. No clue why I have all these fears and worries out of no where. Maybe just the stress of everyday life and managing my home and kids just caught up with me. After all I am a little bit of a neat freak or “perfectionist” as my husband calls it. But u can’t keep a perfect house and life with two toddlers, u just can’t. It took me a while to figure that out. I’ve had to learn how to let things go and prioritize task, and when ur pretty much OCD, it’s hard to let them things go.
    One more thing. So this one week about 6 months ago I convinced myself (all in one weeks time) I had ring worm, lock jaw, and tetanus from rusty earrings. I went to the ER 3 separate times over these illnesses. NOT ONE of them proven to be true. Well, at the end of that very long week my husband asked me for sex and I said “I can’t even believe u want to have sex after all considered this week! The ringworm, lock jaw and tetanus…” he literally Burst out laughing so hard and so did I because I realized at that point just how ridiculous that statement was. And how ridiculous it was to think I literally had all that non-sense. Sometimes it really is hilarious when I look back and think about all the “illnesses” but it’s never funny at the time u think u have them! But yeah, we look back and laugh A LOT at my made up disorders.

  35. What to do then? Especially after severe burnout. Should I stop for some time my work. In fact I had a very early retirement after a lot of hard work but continued at another level

  36. Hello Dr. Tracey Marks, my question is, is stress an excuse for abusive behavior? When an abusive partner goes to therapy and reduces their stress, is it possible that they can discontinue their abusive behavior? Would mean a lot to me if you made a video about this, thank you!

  37. My stress levels are out of control😠! Primary care physician prescribed my anxiety hydroxyzine pamoate 50 mg BID PRN! Since 2003 I prescribed diazepam 10mg QID # 120! Prescribed the hydroxyzine Pamoate 50mg for allergies and sleep!

  38. I just wanna say thank you for the extensive information you provide with your videos, and thank you for your videos in general. I couldn't sleep and had symptoms of anxiety when I came across your videos whilst trying to distract myself. Although I've known I have anxiety for a while know, I wasn't aware of how it can affect my body besides the usual stuff (heart racing, shortness of breath, lump in throat, etc). I immediately recognized most of the signs you listed as stuff I've been going through lately, and just the affirmation that they're not something I'm going through because I'm crazy or anything helped calm me down.
