I love what I do because I love public health. My position here at the health department in Pinellas County is to do all the operations for the dental program. We work very closely with St. Petersburg College and we’ve done that for years now. We’ve had an agreement with them to let the students of the dental hygiene program use our clinics. The sophomore hygiene students actually come in and see patients as part of the curriculum in the program, and the freshman come in and observe. We’ve worked successfully with them for a long time and plan to continue. Most of our hygienists are graduates from St. Petersburg College. We hire them because they come out, they’re ready to work, they have the experience and the knowledge, they mix right in to our clinics, we’ve met most of them through their rounds, so it’s a perfect fit. We absolutely need more professionals in public health, especially in the dental field. Hands down if somebody asked me what program I would recommend for dental hygiene, I would recommend the St. Petersburg College dental hygiene program. When you graduate, you are ready to go in to the workforce.
