Wisdom of Wellbeing – PrEP (HIV Prevention)

The Wisdom of Wellbeing Pre-exposure
prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a prevention method for those who are HIV-negative
but at a high risk of becoming infected. PrEP requires taking a once-daily
prescription which can help keep the virus from establishing a permanent
infection if you are exposed to HIV. Geisinger Commonwealth faculty member
Dr. Shubhra Shetty tells us it is important to take the pill as prescribed. The
higher the concentration of PrEP medication in a person’s system, the more
effective it is. In fact, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of infection by
92%. It is very important to remember that PrEP does not protect individuals
from other sexually transmitted diseases. Be sure to combine it with additional
prevention methods and safe sex practices for better protection. If you
are at risk, contact your doctor, commit to HIV screenings and related tests and
counseling every three months. That’s the Wisdom of Wellbeing.
